Quick recipe – pick & mix savory bowl

From a dietary perspective, it may sound boring, but eating a colorful, varied and balanced diet focusing mostly on wholefoods is one of the best (and simplest!) tools we can utilise when it comes to looking after our overall health and wellness…

This recipe is a bit of a pick and mix guide to putting together a nourishing savory bowl that can help to cover off a nice mix of macronutrients (protein, fats and carbs) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals)…gather your ingredients based on what you have on hand and/or feel like eating and change it up each time – make it yours and enjoy the process!

Start with some leafy greens in the bottom of your bowl and layer on your protein, carbohydrates and good fat/s + some beautiful, nutrient dense veggies (and fruits too if you like) to go with them – some ingredient ideas are:

  • Leafy greens: spinach, baby spinach, rocket, kale, cos lettuce, sprouts, collard greens, watercress
  • Protein: seafood, meat and poultry, eggs, beans and legumes, cheese (ie; haloumi, fetta, bocconcini), quinoa, tofu & tempeh (go for organic and non-GMO), hemp seeds, nuts
  • Carbohydrates: sweet potato & potato, brown or doongara rice, whole grain pasta (&/or pulse pastas which are also a source of protein), buckwheat noodles (ie; soba noodles), rice noodles
  • Good fats: avocado, olive oil, olives, hemp seeds, nuts and seeds
  • Veggies: cucumber, carrots, beetroot, celery, broccoli, green beans, snow peas, capsicum, zucchini, cauliflower, radish, mushrooms, tomatoes, asparagus
  • Fruits: strawberries, mandarin, pear, apple, nectarine, peach, papaya, mango
  • Optional additions: sauerkraut, cashew cheese, pesto, hummus, tzatziki, dulse flakes, salt & pepper, fresh chopped herbs
  • Some quick dressing combo’s:
    • olive oil + lemon juice/apple cider vinegar
    • hummus/tahini + apple cider vinegar
    • tahini + salt + garlic powder + warm water
